oh sorry and 30ml liquid hand sanitizer in my carry one?

    • Ali Garland
      March 9, 2020 @ 3:41 pm

As long as your hand sanitizer fits in your liquids bag, a 30ml bottle is fine to take on the plane. And tissues are always allowed, I don’t leave home without them!

Can you bring Lysol Disinfected wipes in a container in a carry on

    • Ali Garland
      March 5, 2020 @ 9:13 pm

Hi Debbie, yes wipes are allowed in your carry on bag, and TSA does not consider them to be liquids, so they don’t have to go in your liquids bag.

Dear Ali, I wonder if a undercoat deshedding tool (for pets – FURminator deShedding-Tool Katze) could be taken on my carry on? Thank you a lot for your advice. Best

    • Ali Garland
      March 5, 2020 @ 5:47 pm

Hi Paula! I’m not familiar with this, so I looked it up, and I can’t quite tell if it’s sharp or not. My worry is that if it’s sharp, TSA might confiscate it. But if it’s a comb type thing, I think it would be fine in your carry on bag. I can’t make any guarantees, but you could try asking TSA through their Twitter or FB profile, supposedly they’re pretty responsive.

Can I bring sneaker on the plane cuz I just brought them and I want them in good shape. Also what about a gaming console and controllers are they allow on the airplane as well ??

    • Ali Garland
      March 5, 2020 @ 5:45 pm

Hello, of course your sneakers are allowed in your carry on bag. Your gaming console and controllers are allowed too, I’d pack them in your carry on so they don’t get damaged. Security sometimes gets picky and wants all kinds of electronics taken out for screening, so be aware that you might have to take them out of your bag like you do with your laptop and liquids bag, but there’s no rule against having them with you.

    good morning,

can a guitar be taken on the plane as a carry on?

    • Ali Garland
      March 2, 2020 @ 12:36 pm

Hi Hayley, that depends on the airline’s rules. A guitar is quite large and will usually be larger than the luggage size allowance for carry on, but each airline has its own rules about musical instruments, so I recommend you check their site.

We have a trip planned to the UK, Ireland and Scotland in June. From what I’ve read, it will be permitted to carry our toiletries and make up in our carry on bags as long as the liquid items are in a CLEAR ONE QUART, ZIP LOCK TOP BAG, correct?
QUESTION: So, you’re allowed as many containers of liquids in your zip lock bag you can fit in as long as the containers are not over over 3.4 oz, correct?
Any item that can keep it’s shape outside of it’s container is considered a solid, correct? Like a tube of lipstick, stick deodorant, stick foundation?

    • Ali Garland
      February 28, 2020 @ 11:38 pm

Hi Linda! Any liquids, gels, creams, or aerosols that you pack in your carry on bag must be in containers no bigger than 3.4 ounces, all containers must fit into a 1 quart clear zip top bag, and each passenger is allowed to have one liquids bag. If you have containers that are smaller than 3.4 ounces, you should be able to fit a bunch in there, so as many as you can fit and still completely close the bag is fine. Just don’t pack it so tight that the bag bursts. The items you listed – tube of lipstick, stick deodorant, stick foundation – all sound like solids to me. Makeup like liquid foundation, mascara, etc. should go in your liquids bag. Read about traveling with makeup here and solid toiletry alternatives here. And remember you can buy just about anything you need while you’re there if you can’t pack enough toiletries for your trip. Have a great trip!

good morning, my daughter wants to take a gift with to the Netherlands, can she take some African beads with or a small wooden sculpture?

    • Ali Garland
      February 28, 2020 @ 1:38 pm

Hi Hayley! As long as the stuff she’s taking isn’t on a banned list by the Netherlands (like many places ban ivory) it should be fine. I don’t know the rules about wooden objects being brought into the Netherlands. Australia and New Zealand typically don’t allow wood but I think European countries are less strict. You should check the customs and agricultural rules for the Netherlands if you’re worried.

    • Ali Garland
      February 23, 2020 @ 8:12 pm

Hi Rafa! I’m not exactly sure what you’re talking about. Do you mean a compact disc that has x-rays on it? Like computer files that are x-rays? That sounds like something you wouldn’t want getting lost, so I recommend keeping it in your carry on luggage.

What about meds in pharmacy bottles??

    • Ali Garland
      February 22, 2020 @ 11:03 pm

Hi Thomas! That is fine in your carry on bag. ALWAYS pack your prescription medication in your carry on. If you pack it in checked baggage and the airline loses your luggage, it could be a big problem for you medically. Remember TSA is looking for things that could be a security risk, and your pills aren’t sharp or explosive or anything like that.

Can an emotional support dog ride in the cabin with the owner, also can bottled water be taken in a carry on bag?

    • Ali Garland
      February 17, 2020 @ 12:32 am

Hi Jan! The rules about emotional support dogs vary by country and airline, so I can’t give you an easy answer on this. I suggest contacting your airline to find out about it, and check out my friend Gigi’s blog here. She travels with an emotional support dog and has lots of info from her own experiences. As for the water bottle, you can pack an EMPTY bottle, but not one with any liquid in it because it won’t get through security. But then you can fill up your empty bottle after clearing security.

I take lovenox injections. Will my pre filled (completely sealed) syringes be allowed?

    • Ali Garland
      January 27, 2020 @ 3:02 pm

Hi Joan! Medical items, including syringes, are allowed in your carry on bag, but you have to let the security screener know that you have that kind of thing before your stuff goes through the xray. Here’s what TSA says about traveling with unused syringes: “Unused syringes are allowed when accompanied by injectable medication. You must declare these items to security officers at the checkpoint for inspection. We recommend, but do not require, that your medications be labeled to facilitate the security process.” And I recommend reading TSA’s info about traveling with medical supplies here: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/special-procedures

Can a suit bag be used as a carry on?

    • Ali Garland
      January 22, 2020 @ 3:13 pm

Hi Carolyn! Yes, most airlines allow a suit bag instead of a carry on suitcase/backpack. It’s worth checking the airline’s carry on info since some actually list measurements for how big a suit bag can be.

Very good information , but I did not see anything about medication. I have may have over looked it, if so I apologize.

    • Ali Garland
      January 13, 2020 @ 12:01 pm

Thanks Patrick! I’m actually working on a separate post all about traveling with medication, but it’s giant so it’s taking me awhile to get through. The short version though: Always pack your medicine in your carry on bag. You never know when your checked luggage might get delayed or even lost, so I always pack all of my medicine in my carry on. Standard medicine like pills can be transport in their original packaging or if you want to use one of those daily pill cases or something else, that’s fine, especially for flights within the US. If you’re flying internationally, you should keep it in the original packaging whenever possible. If your medicine is liquid, it does NOT have to comply with the carry on liquids rules, but you need to tell the security screener you have liquid medicine before your stuff goes through the xray. Check out TSA’s info about special procedures for traveling medication here.

Can I take a set of glass dishes in my carryon

    • Ali Garland
      January 13, 2020 @ 11:36 am

Hi Bree! That should be fine as long as they fit within your airline’s rules for carry on weight. And make sure you wrap them in something to prevent them from breaking.

I’m planning on bringing pop tarts and sticks to our hotel.
I was wondering if i packed them in my carryon but don’t plan on eating them on the plane is that acceptable?

Also i wear a magnetic belt on my back while doing a lot of walking. Is this acceptable to put in my carryon.

    Thank you
    Brenda

    • Ali Garland
      January 13, 2020 @ 11:27 am

Hi Brenda! Pop tarts should be fine in your carry on. Most food is allowed as long as it isn’t liquid, and even liquid food is fine if it fits within the liquids rules. You can read more about taking food on a plane here.

The belt is fine in your carry on too. If you happen to be wearing it when you’re at the airport, you will probably have to take it off before going through the scanner.

I have a hand-painted cow skull, (gift from relative). I am flying from Texas to California, can i pack it in my carry-on?

    • Ali Garland
      January 13, 2020 @ 10:58 am

Hi Tracy! When I look up “bones” on the TSA website, it says artificial bones are allowed. I can’t find anything about real bones though. But I can’t think of any reason why your painted skull would be denied, as long as there aren’t any sharp points on it. I can’t be 100% sure though, so you might want to ask TSA directly through their Twitter of Facebook profile.

    • Ali Garland
      January 13, 2020 @ 10:55 am

I’m not 100% sure what that is, but it’s a lock for a door or window or something, right? I don’t see any reason why security would have a problem with that, unless it’s so heavy that they worry you could use it as a weapon. I can’t make any guarantees, but I think it would be fine.

    Hi Ali,
I am 53 and have not flown since I was 16, am needing to fly for sons Marine graduation and have several misc medications, all capsules/tablets, 2/3 day trip~
These are in a large daily dispenser, do I need them in bottles?
    HOW do I pack them?
    Thanks so much!

    • Ali Garland
      December 28, 2019 @ 11:17 am

Hi Darci! If you’re just flying domestically within the US, you should be fine to keep them in your daily pill box if that’s what you prefer. TSA doesn’t actually care much, if at all, about medication in pill form. Since they are looking for dangerous items and items that could be used as a weapon, your pills don’t really concern them. If you’re flying internationally, it’s best to keep them in the original package, but it doesn’t sound like that’s what you’re doing. I’d recommend taking what you need for the length of the trip, plus a few extra days just in case there’s a delay for some reason. Packing them in your daily pill container is fine. And definitely pack all medications in your carry on bag so they’re always with you.

You list says knitting needles are okay. What about loom knitting, specifically, the loom hook tool?

    • Ali Garland
      December 28, 2019 @ 11:13 am

Hi Gail! I don’t know enough about the specific types of needles and hooks, so this might be a judgement call for you. Is the tool you’re talking about sharp? If it’s sharp, I wouldn’t take the chance because TSA is likely to confiscate it. If it’s not sharp and it’s similar to a knitting needle, TSA probably won’t have a problem with it, though I can’t make guarantees. You can also take a picture of it and ask TSA through their Facebook or Twitter.

    • Ali Garland
      December 28, 2019 @ 11:11 am

Hi Maureen! That should be fine in your checked luggage, or if he’s using it, he just needs to take it out of his pocket to go through security. But since it’s holding money, make sure he puts it in his bag, not just thrown into the bin, that way no one can steal it when he isn’t looking.

Hello dear pubber, I have a car washing pipe and its tap. Can I take it into the Hand carry?
    Positive answer will be appreciated.

    • Ali Garland
      December 23, 2019 @ 1:13 pm

I’m not quite sure what that is, but when I google it, I see pictures of a hose and spray nozzle for washing a car. If that’s what you’re talking about, I can’t think of any issues, but I can’t make any guarantees. If it’s actually a pipe, like a hard metal pipe, I would lean towards no for that, simply because I’d be afraid that security would consider it something that could be used as a weapon.

Hi Vivian! Yes, you can take that in your carry on. Glass is allowed and normal candles are allowed (although for future reference, gel candles are NOT allowed) so you’re fine. And wrapping it sounds great, you don’t want it to break in transit!

    • Ali Garland
      December 17, 2019 @ 10:18 am

Hi Sandra, you should check with your airline. Most airlines have special procedures regarding cremated ashes, and most do not allow you to pack them in checked bags, only carry on. But the airline will have more information about anything special you might need to do.

I wear a gold necklace which I never take off, am I going to have a problem going through the body check machines. And what about watches too. I am going from Europe to Australia via Singapore. Thank you for your response.

    • Ali Garland
      December 9, 2019 @ 2:58 pm

It really depends. Certain metals aren’t a problem, but some are. I have small hoop earrings I never take out and I never take off my wedding and engagement rings, and they’ve never been a problem. I think the best you can do is ask the security agent before you go through the scanner. If they do tell you to take off your necklace and/or watch, put them in your carry on bag, not loose in the bin.

Can I bring wrapped gifts in my luggage?

    • Ali Garland
      December 9, 2019 @ 2:33 pm

Hi Lorraine! TSA recommends that you don’t wrap gifts before going through security because they might need to unwrap them. I don’t know why an xray can’t see through wrapping paper, but I’ve heard too many stories of people’s gifts being unwrapped, so your best option is to wrap them once you arrive at your destination. It’s annoying, but you could cut out the amount you’ll need, fold it up and bring it with you.

Can I carry homemade sweets like LADDU, CHAKLI ,CHIVDA , GHIEE & INDIAN MASALA POWDER ?

    • Ali Garland
      December 3, 2019 @ 12:06 pm

Hi, I don’t know what all of those things are, but if any of them would be considered liquids, creams, or gels, they must comply with the liquids rules. So each container must be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or smaller, and all containers must fit in a 1 quart (1 liter) clear zip top bag, and you’re only allowed one liquids bag per person. Someone else asked about ghee recently, and I feel like that’s debatable whether the security officer will consider it liquid or not. You can read more about taking food on a plane here. Also, the US and a few other places have recently put into place rules about powders. TSA says: “Powder-like substances greater than 12 oz. / 350 mL must be placed in a separate bin for X-ray screening. They may require additional screening and containers may need to be opened.” I hope this helps!

    • Ali Garland
      November 19, 2019 @ 4:48 pm

Hi Steven! I don’t have any experience with things like water pumps, but I can’t think of a reason why they wouldn’t be allowed, especially in checked luggage. There’s always a chance security might want to open your bag to look at them more closely, so I can’t make any guarantees.

HI, I am shortly travelling from Cardiff to Melbourne via Doha. Would I be allowed to take a gel seat cushion as part of my hand luggage.
        Thanks

        • Ali Garland
          February 22, 2020 @ 11:05 pm

Hi Julia! I’m not sure I can give you a concrete answer on that one. I worry that the gel in the cushion would be considered a liquid (the rule is liquids, gels, aerosols, and creams) and security might confiscate it. If it’s something you need for medical reasons, you could try getting a letter from your doctor. And you can try contacting the TSA equivalent in each country where you’ll go through security and see if they can give you an answer. But as an alternative, could you bring a foam pillow or an inflatable one instead? Sorry I can’t tell you for sure on this one!

Is a CPAP Machine in a case counted as a carry on?

    • Ali Garland
      November 16, 2019 @ 10:52 am

Hi Maxine! Since it’s a medical item, usually airlines can’t count it as one of your carry on items, which means technically you’d be allowed to bring it in addition to your normal carry on luggage. Verify that with the airline you’re flying, and it’s also important to read the TSA info about traveling with a CPAP machine here.

However, since it’s something that can probably get damaged easily, you might want to consider taking it in your carry on bag…assuming it fits. Look for your airline on our carry on luggage size chart here and make sure you can pack it in a bag that fits within the size and weight restrictions of the airline you’re flying on.

Is it possible to bring cheese and jewelries on my carry on bag? Is it also allowed if I bring a handbag aside from the carry on bag?

Hi Emiliana! Definitely pack any jewelry in your carry on bag, never in checked luggage. This is so you don’t have to worry about your jewelry being stolen or any issues if your luggage gets lost, and the airlines always say to pack jewelry and other valuables in carry on baggage because they won’t be held responsible for valuables in checked luggage. As for the cheese, that depends on a few things. If it’s a softer cheese, security personnel might consider it liquid/cream/gel, which means you’d only be allowed to bring 3.4 ounces/100ml and it would have to fit in your liquids bag. If it’s a hard cheese, they’ll consider it a solid and you can bring as much as you want in your carry on bag. Also, where are you flying to/from? If you’re flying domestically, there aren’t any other issues to worry about, but if you’re flying to another country, you need to read the customs and agriculture rules for bringing food into that country. Cheese and other dairy products are sometimes not allowed to be taken into some countries. You can read more about bringing food on a plane here.

Sorry, just realized I forgot to answer your question about your handbag. Most, but not all, airlines allow you to have a carry on item plus a personal item, but this is up to the airline. Look for the airline you’re flying on our carry on luggage size chart and click on the airline name to read more about their allowances and restrictions.

I am going to a fancy dress party and wanted to know if my suit covered in el strip lights with 2 battery packs will be allowed in my hand luggage? Any help is appreciated.

Hi Colin! I can’t think of any reason why this would be a problem. You’re definitely better off packing it in your carry on bag since it has batteries. You can read more about taking batteries on a plane here.

Can I take 4 oz bars of soap and 3.5oz glass bottle of cologne on plane?

    • Ali Garland
      November 9, 2019 @ 11:23 am

Hi Jackie! Bars of soap are allowed in your carry on bag since they are solids. But the cologne is too big by just a little bit. Liquids in your carry on must comply with the liquids rule, which means each container must be 3.4 ounces/100ml or smaller, and all containers must fit in a one quart clear zip top bag. Since 3.5 oz is over the limit, it will be confiscated. Even if it’s only half full. So you’ll either have to pack it in your checked bag or leave it at home.

Can we take ghee on plane which weights a kg or more?

    • Ali Garland
      November 8, 2019 @ 11:50 am

That’s a tricky one! I honestly don’t know if security would consider ghee to be a liquid or not. Things like peanut butter, dips and spreads, and creamy cheeses are considered liquid and would have to comply with the liquids rules. My instinct is that butter would be considered a liquid/gel/cream since it’s spreadable, and ghee is pretty close in consistency. Ultimately I think it comes down to the opinion of the security agent, so this one is a hard call. Checked luggage, yes, but carry on…that’s questionable. Sorry I can’t give you a more definite answer on this one!
