Air Canada

Air Canada is the flag carrier of Canada. It’s also the country’s largest airline with flights to more than 200 airports on 6 continents. The airline operates more than 400 aircraft, and they are a member of the Star Alliance airline group. Air Canada provides size restrictions for both your carry on bag and your personal item, so be sure to read more below.

Number of carry on items allowed: 1 plus a personal item

Note: Star Alliance Gold members traveling across two or more-member carriers are entitled to two carry-on baggage items.

Maximum allowed in imperial: (official)

  • H x W x D = 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 in
  • H x W x D for personal item = 17 x 13 x 6 in
  • Weight = “must be light enough that you can store it in the overhead bin unassisted”

Maximum allowed in metric: (official)

  • H x W x D = 55 x 40 x 23 cm
  • H x W x D for personal item = 43 x 33 x 16 cm
  • Weight = “must be light enough that you can store it in the overhead bin unassisted”

In addition to your carry on item, Air Canada also allows you to bring a personal item. This item must fit under the seat in front of you and comply with the dimensions listed above. Some examples of personal items listed on their website include:

  • Carry-on bag, roller bag, backpack, briefcase, laptop
  • Cat or small dog in its carrier (but always check the airline’s pet policy on board before booking your ticket)
  • Airport shopping and duty-free purchases
  • Sport racquet (e.g. tennis, squash, badminton), musical instrument (again, as long as it fits within the dimensions noted above)
  • Camera bag, diplomatic or consular bag
  • Garment bag (size and weight restrictions apply)
